Gettysburg

Somewhere in all that running around on Friday, we decided to go to Gettysburg on Saturday, the next day, because "that made sense."  No really, it was gorgeous weather on Friday, looked like Saturday would be the same, and it was a place that Jeremy really wanted to visit while we are here.  It's about 1-1/2 hours north of us.  It ended up being a bit cloudy, but it was fun to have Niki and Dave join us.

Leaving the Visitor's Center, we walked through the woods and up through this land, just as the Union soldiers did:

This large memorial is for all the units from Pennsylvania, since they are the ones who took fought to keep their literal land.  In all, during the three day battle, 30,000 soldiers from all states and units were killed, with an additional 21,000 injured or missing.

The land where the battle took place is quite extensive.  Each and every unit has placed a memorial of some sort in some particular place.  They are hundreds located on top of hills and knolls, in the woods and fields, etc.

Here is one view of the official cemetary.  This is where President Lincoln came a few months later and gave the Gettysburg address...yes, right in the cemetary.
