Other Recent Dinners

Where we stay in our temporary apartment is not too far from a few restaurant hot spots that are linked together.  They are Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, etc.  (Little river keys/fingers that they have lined with places to eat and socialize.)  To get to those areas, there is a nice walking path.  We often go out to eat/try a new restaurant in these areas because 1) there are a lot of choices, 2) the food is pretty good at most, and 3) it gets some energy out of the kids.

Along one, I have always liked this building:

Another night, we were somewhere different (a location called Holland Village) and ate a delicious Mexican dinner.  There, from 6 p.m. on, they partition off the side streets and the restaurants pull their tables out into the street to accommodate the dinner and night crowds.

Usually we get a taxi wherever we go.  That particular night we decided to use the MRT (subway) to cross most of the city and then get a taxi for the final part.  This was not a good decision.  It had started to rain while we had been on the subway.  The one thing that everyone learns quick is how difficult it is to get a taxi while it is raining.  With over 5 million people on a small island, Singapore creates obnoxiously high taxes and limits the number of driving certificates each year to keep the number of cars on the road down.  This means that most people use public transportation.  We waited in line for an hour and a half for our taxi.  You can see how thrilled the kids were:

In one of the open air food centre's across from where we are currently living, we had dinner one night and then let the kids get dessert afterwards.  They all decided to try one of the local favorites, whose name escapes me.  However, it is basically a big pile of shaved ice with several different syrup favorings.  The syrup favorings are a little unique...guava, durian, etc.  So this night, we opted for chocolate.  In addition to the syrup, though, they add toppings.  This is also unique:  corn, red beans, aloe cubes, etc.  Yes, a local, popular favorite.  We opted not for the toppings.
